The Mauritshuis shows the very best of the Dutch painters from the Golden Age. In the heart of The Hague you can find this compact but delicate collection, with masterpieces like The Girl with a Pearl Earring from Vermeer, and the The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, from Rembrandt van Rijn. Balthasar van der Ast est. 1640 introduces a series of important improvements in the painting of still flower bouquets. He specialized in stills of flowers and fruit, as well as painting a number of remarkable shell stills; he is considered to be a pioneer in the genre of shell painting. One can imagine the flowers really existed, they radiate exclusivity.
